Johannesburg Software engineer Serial side-project starter

Hi, I'm Mayibongwe.
I build things for the fun of it.

By day I write software. By night (and most weekends) I'm off building my own apps, tinkering with ideas, and shipping small things with friends. This little corner of the internet is where those projects live.

Stuff I'm building

A mix of side projects, experiments, and the one that pays the bills. Some are live, some are half-built, all of them are things I actually wanted to exist.

  • Bitsync

    Building

A personal finance and health dashboard I built for my own daily use. Budgets with categories and projected vs actual spend, plus steps, sleep, water, and workouts all in one place. I made it because I wanted it to exist, and now I use it every day. The beta is live and mobile companion apps are next.

  • Community platform

    Building

A tool for gated communities and neighbourhoods to organise, talk to each other, and actually get things done together. Built with friends, and shaped around how communities really work rather than how an app thinks they should.

  • Engineering as a creative outlet

    Exploring

A running experiment in what code looks like when it exists for the joy of making rather than pure utility. Playing around with where code, visuals, and a bit of play meet, usually alongside friends.

    Professional

Software for healthcare administration, built with a small team. Not the flashy stuff, but the kind of work where reliability and clear communication matter more than anything. It pays for the fun projects above.

What I'm into lately

Updated July 2026

Building

  • Getting Bitsync's mobile apps off the ground, starting with water reminders and budgeting on the go.
  • Shaping the community platform with friends, one weekend at a time.

Learning

  • Electronics fundamentals, slowly working toward DIY security gadgets I can build myself.
  • Poking at game development as a creative playground with friends.

Curious about

  • Where engineering and art overlap, and what happens when you build for feel instead of function.
  • Picking up some structured study again, just for the fun of learning.

Come say
hello.

I'm always up for talking side projects, swapping ideas, or hearing about whatever you're building. Drop me a line on LinkedIn or send an email. I'm in Johannesburg, and I'll reply (eventually).
